Ajuga reptans
Chocolate Chip

This unique variety of ajuga sports relatively small, narrow leaves that weave a tight mat of foliage. Depending on the amount of sunlight they receive, the leaves are a mix of rich chocolate-purple and green (deeper color in more sun).

From mid to late spring, short spikes of light blue flowers stand upright above the low, spreading foliage. The effect is stunning when planted en masse.

Its petite size makes this variety suitable for planting between stepping stones, in wall crevices, or in other small spaces. It is also useful for erosion control on slopes.

More Information

Ajuga grows best in partial to full shade but will also grow in full sun if constant moisture is provided. It will tolerate any soil, even poor ones, as long as it is well-drained. Good air circulation is essential to avoid crown rot. Propagate by division any time during the growing season.

Some Ajuga cultivars are not fast growers or invasive, so check with your nursery as to the growth characteristics of the one you want. Will tolerate some compaction by foot traffic. Avoid planting in wet shade.

Propagation Method: Cuttings, Division

Root Form: Rhizome, Stolen

Soil Condition: Sandy, Loamy, Clay, Well drained, Slightly alkaline, Neutral ph, Acidic.  Does not tolerate salt

Environmental: Tolerates moderate drought

Pests: Aphids, root-knot nematodes

The chance of crown rot can be reduced by keeping Ajuga from becoming to densely planted
