Blanket Flower

Gaillardia aristata
Amber Wheels

This fun new selection of Blanket Flower has large, golden yellow flowers with fringed petals and a prominent amber-red center. They add flair to cut flower bouquets and provide continuous color in the landscape all summer long. Butterflies are highly attracted to its bright colors.

This perennial stands between 2 and 3 feet tall when it's in bloom, so it should be planted towards the rear of the flower border. For a great combination, plant lower growing perennials such as purple Bellflowers and Euphorbia 'Bonfire' in front of your Gaillardia 'Amber Wheels'.

Gaillardia requires little care once it is established. It is heat tolerant and actually prefers to be grown in poorer soils. It gets its name from the manner in which it used to blanket North American prairies with their blooms. Gaillardia can still be found in fields and along roadsides in the prairie region and into the Rockies.

More Information

Gaillardia requires full sun and well-drained soil in order to prosper. Given too much shade, the plants tend to flop over. Though they will perform best in moist soils, they are highly drought tolerant. Do not enrich the soil with compost or other rich ingredients when planting this perennial. It does best in poor, loose soils and does not tolerate heavy clay. Plants may be divided every 2-3 years in either spring or fall and are also easily grown from seed. Deadheading spent blooms will prolong the bloom time.

Soil Condition: Sandy, Loamy, Well drained, Neutral ph, ph adaptable

Environmental: Drought tolerant

Pests: aphids, beetles, borers, leaf hoppers, mites, thrips, wireworms

Diseases: leaf spot, powdery mildews, root rot, rust, viruses
